I remember on night back in the 70's, I was partying down town at Luchetties Del Mar Bar when two liquor agents walked in and checked out the place. These two liquor agents Eddie Moreno from Santa Rita and Lalo Sanchez from Deming were temporarily assigned to Gallup at about ll:30 on the evening of March, 31 1970, they went into the American Bar to talk with the owner. Before entering, they ordered several men to move from the parking area in front of the Saloon. Several minutes later from inside the bar, agent Moreno saw four men around the state car, and went out to investigate. When agent Sanchez went outside a short time later, he found Moreno Lying on the sidewalk badly beaten and shot in the head with his own gun. That gun was found later near by. Two men, Julian Martinez of Window Rock and Nelson Loretto of Gallup, were charged with the crime.
Agent Moreno 38 years old in 1970 initially survived the attack and responded to treatment. He died on July 13, 1975 as a result of complications from the assault and gunshot wound. He was survived by his wife.
Also in 1987 ABC was reorganized and became the Investigations bureau special Investigation Division (SID) N.M. Department of Public Safety (DPS). In 1995 The Investigation Bureau became the Alcohol and Gaming Enforcement Section (AGES) of SID. Have a great day!
